Class Overview

The parts of this class that stuck with me the most was Rodriguez's Aria, Hehir's Ablism, and the open forum roleplay for Wind-Wolf.

Rodriguez's Aria stuck with me because of my service learning experience. I was witnessing students before my eyes "losing out" on instruction because it was taught in English and they only understand Spanish. I watched students get pulled out of class other times during instructional time for what I assume was enrichment...Language barriers are something I never realized the severity of in schools.

Hehir's ableism was interesting to me. I like how it was broken down into different groups. You really don't know what something is like till you hear it from the person it effects. Hehir demasks that.

The open forum roleplay on Wind-Wolf was interesting. You realized as the others were acting, just how involved/passionate you can get about a situation when it is YOU it effects.

  1. Hi Rey, I like your picks! I agree with your take on the Wind Wolf role play. The people acting within the role got very passionate with the characters as it seemed to take a more personal turn.

  2. Hi Rey, I like the topics you picked! I also agree with you that the role play of Wind Wolf was beneficial to see how involved and passionate you can be when you are in a situation fighting for somthing that you feel strongly about.

  3. Hi Rey, I totally agree with about the "'losing out' on instruction'". I have witnessed it myself. I worked with a student whose first language is not Spanish but instead a Guatemalan indigenous language and I could only imagine the amounts of processing that student had to do. Many times we all think just because a students comes from a "Spanish" speaking country we fall under the assumption they all speak "Spanish." I think districts and teachers need to be aware of this facts so they could teach equitably.
